Water Quality Project

The BHS Flint Creek Water Quality project involves science students in real-life data collection and analysis.  The students are responsible for learning to collect biological, physical and chemical data about the Flint Creek watershed.  Flint Creek drains approximately 2/3 of Des Moines County and empties into the Mississippi River upstream from the City of Burlington’s water treatment facility.  After collecting the data students organize, analyze and present this data to a subcommittee of the Des Moines County Conservation board.  The committee then uses this data to determine a plan of action for improving the water quality in Flint Creek.

The data is collected in the spring and fall of each school year.  Students in Chemistry, Zoology, Honors Biology and AP Chemistry can earn extra credit and silver cord hours for this community service project.
